ROLAND OCTA-CAPTURE USB AUDIO INTERFACE

The Roland Octa-Capture has been a favorite in the Smaart community for many years. With 8 analog inputs and 8 analog outputs in a device that is less than 11 inches wide and 6 inches deep, its form factor to Input/Output is ideal for most all applications.

The Octa-Capture utilizes 4 front panel and 4 rear panel XLR/TRS combo input jacks, each with phantom power and variable level control. Noteworthy of the Octa-Capture is that XLR preamps 1-6 have a sensitivity of +10dBu at minimum gain, making them ideal for SPL measurement with low sensitivity microphones where channels 7-8 have a sensitivity of +16dBu at minimum gain, meaning they will have a better chance at handling the increased voltage produced by higher sensitivity measurement microphones at concert levels.*

A key feature of the Octa-Capture is its integration with Smaart. The phantom power and gain control for its preamps are controllable directly from the Smaart interface. This allows Smaart users of the Octa-Capture to enable ‘gain-tracking’ after calibrating its inputs for SPL. With gain tracking enabled, you can adjust the input gain of the Octa-Captures preamps without losing SPL calibration. Smaart will automatically adjust the calibration to reflect the new dB offset. In tandem with the Roland Control Panel application, all of the Octa-Capture’s input and output settings can be adjusted, and recalled, digitally.

*As a rule of thumb, multiply the mic’s sensitivity in mV/Pa by 200 to determine its voltage output at 140 dB SPL, our target for concert-level SPL measurement. For example, if your microphone has a sensitivity of 34 mV/Pa, at 140 dB SPL it will produce a voltage of 6.8Vrms or +19dBu. As long as that number (in this case +19dBu) is less than the preamp’s maximum input level at minimum gain, you can be confident that the interface can accommodate signal peaks without overloading.
